Platform EngineerCompany: Scribd - www.scribd.com
Location: 539 Bryant St., Suite 200 San Francisco, CA 94107
About Us:
Scribd is building the world's online library. We're already profitable and one of the largest sites on the web, with a global user base of over 80 million. But our journey is only 1% finished.
We are still a very small team iterating rapidly, and we're looking for excellent engineering minds to take us to the next level.
Scribd's book subscription service (think "Netflix for books") gives readers unlimited access to over 400,000 books from over 900 publishers for a low monthly fee. Using Scribd is like bringing a national library into your home, where you can browse and read as much as you want from your tablet, phone, or computer.
The Role:
The platform engineering role is the core role building the user-facing Scribd product. As a platform engineer, you'll spend most of your time building out our new features as web functionality and mobile APIs.
This is a multi-functional role and a great opportunity to learn new tools and technologies. On any given day, you could be working on extending the Scribd data model, improving the algorithms for the Scribd search engine, or integrating with new third party APIs. In this role, you'll work closely with front-end teams on web, iOS, and Android to bring your features to completion.
We'll be adding a ton of exciting new features to the Scribd app in the next year, and we need your help to accomplish everything we're dreaming of. You'll have the opportunity to work on all aspects of our product, completing features end to end.
Some examples of projects we're currently tackling:
* Building the world's best recommendation engine for books
* The book equivalent of Pandora's "Music Genome Project": an ambitious project to organize all the books in the world and use it to take book discovery to the next level
* Building the most beautiful and powerful reading experience on both web and mobile
* Secret stuff we can't talk about publicly, but which we'd love to fill you in on :)
A few examples of projects we completed this year:
* A distributed, scaling, caching image server written in Go that processes millions of images a day
* A fuzzy matching text filter that can instantly detect two similar, but not identical, passages of text out of a database of all the books in the world
* An automated classification system for automatically optimizing across numerous machine learning algorithms, written in Python
* A completely JavaScript eBook reader that can compute the layout of every word in a 1,000 page book in less than a second
Our Stack:
At Scribd you'll have the opportunity to work across a suite of languages and tools because there are so many features we're working on. We are always open to whatever's best to get the job done, and if you're not experienced with all these tools don't fret...you can learn them here.
Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, jQuery, and Backbone, Coffeescript, Python, Java, Go, MySQL, Solr and ElasticSearch, Scala, Twitter's "Scalding" framework: Scala on Mapreduce, Hive, Hadoop, Hbase, Android and OS/Objective C, Impala, Jenkins + Multijob, Nginx, Redis, Sphinx
Whether you're an expert with these tools now or you're looking to learn, if you can build software, read on!
