Tujia is actually a Chinese word. It means “home on a journey.” Similar to Airbnb, Tujia is a sharing platform to connect travelers with homeowners. We provide alternative accommodations for travelers. So that’s the similarity to Airbnb.

Tujia는 중국어로서 '여행하는 과정에서 보이는 집'이란 뜻. 에어비앤비와 비슷하게 여행객들과 집 소유자들을 연결하는 플랫폼 서비스로, 여행객들에게 대체 숙박시설을 제공한다는 점에서는 에어비엔비와 유사하다.

But, we are actually quite different in a few ways. First, I would like to outline a couple of things specific to China. My husband and I traveled a lot in the U.S. and Europe. So it’s common [when staying in a rented home, too] take out the trash when we leave. However, in China, let’s say somebody booked a villa for about $100 U.S. a night, and you ask him, “By the way, when you leave, please take out the trash,” this person, most people, would not like to do it. Second, there is a trust issue in China. It’s getting better, but it’s still an issue.

So Tujia takes a few different approaches from Airbnb. First, all the listings on our website provide high-quality services. We started with managing our properties ourselves, so we can ensure a high-quality service. We have people inspect each property to make sure all the photos are authentic. 

에어비앤비와 비교하면 시설 등록 절차도 다르다. 서비스 품질을 최상으로 유지하기 위해 숙박시설 관리를 직접하고 있으며, 모든 사진이 진짜인지도 검증하는 직원들도 운영하고 있다. 

And we have been working very actively since the beginning to collaborate with the government. For instance, we signed an agreement to base over 160 environments with different landlords. (Source: Interview with MS. Yang by The WSJ)

서비스 초기부터 중국 지방자치단체와 직접 연계해서 사업을 추진하고 있다는 점도 다르다. 현재 160개의 지방정부와 계약서에 서명했다. 

(*편집자 Note: 현재 중국의 토지제도는 '국가소유제'와 농촌 공동토지인 '집체소유제'로 나뉘는 이원적 구조임. 개인이나 기업은 토지 소유자인 '정부'로부터 장기간 임차해서 사용해야 한다. 그래서 중국 현지에서 토지 사용 문제를 해결하는 능력을 가진 자는 거의 '초능력자' 수준으로 대우를 받는다)
